Where to take paint and chemicals in the Dallas area
The short answer
Most of the Dallas County side drops off for free at the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, 11234 Plano Rd. Rockwall and Heath get front-porch pickup, Plano does curbside pickup by appointment, and Wylie and Murphy hold collection events twice a year. Latex paint can go in your trash once it's completely dry.

The Dallas County center
The Home Chemical Collection Center is at 11234 Plano Rd in Dallas, (214) 553-1765. It's open:
- Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It's free for residents of Addison, Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville, Farmers Branch, Garland, Highland Park, Irving, Mesquite, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse, Seagoville, Sunnyvale, University Park and unincorporated Dallas County. Bring your driver's license and a water or other utility bill. Residents of other cities pay a minimum $100 fee.
What counts as household hazardous waste
Dallas County's list includes paints and stains, varnish and paint removers, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, drain and oven cleaners, aerosol sprays, glues, household batteries, thermometers, and car fluids like motor oil, brake fluid and antifreeze.
Latex paint: dry it out
Dallas County's advice: paint is only a problem while it's liquid. For latex (water-based) paint:
- Combine partial cans into one.
- Pour it over kitty litter in a shallow box or a tray lined with plastic.
- When it's completely dry, break it up and put it in the regular trash.
- Leave empty cans open in the sun until dry; then they can go in the trash too.
Oil-based paint is different: keep it sealed and use it up, or take it to a program above.

Common questions
Can I put latex paint in the trash?
Once it's completely dry, yes, according to Dallas County. Pour it over kitty litter in a lined box or tray, let it harden, and put it in the regular trash. Empty cans with no liquid left can go in the trash too.
What about oil-based paint and stain?
Don't dry it out. Dallas County notes it keeps for years if sealed, so use it up, give it away, or take it to a household hazardous waste program.
Can Texas Junk Crew haul paint or chemicals?
No. We can't haul paint of any kind, liquid or dried, or chemicals, fuels, oils, propane tanks or car batteries. We'll set them aside so you can take them to one of the programs on this page.
Is the Dallas County center free?
Free for residents of the participating cities, including Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse and Sunnyvale, with a driver's license and a water or utility bill. Residents of other cities pay at least $100.
Where do car batteries and motor oil go?
Dallas County says most service stations recycle motor oil, brake and transmission fluid, antifreeze and car batteries.
